Playing the pressure game

I took my standard dataset - All matches played between top team since 2019. Then I created a set of forced errors (i.e. things that a team will start doing worse if they are under pressure)

  • Ruck %

  • Maul %

  • Scrum %

  • Lineout %

  • Turnovers Conceded

  • Free Kicks Conceded

  • Penalties conceded

  • Tackle %

  • Red Cards

  • Yellow Cards

I looked at all the games a team played, for example South Africa. Then I looked at the forced error stats for the team South Africa was playing in each game (let's say Ireland). I compared Ireland Stats for all games against their stats against South Africa to see if they were making more or less errors. I repeated this process for all games that South Africa played to see if South Africa makes teams make mistakes - it turns out they do!

I did not have sufficient data for Chile and Namibia so I left them out

So it turns out New Zealand played terrible, not that South Africa played really well
